BBC responds to upset Doctor Who fans

"Change me dear, and it seems not a moment to soon"

Human beings generally don't respond well to change, this fact was once again hammered home on Sunday when the BBC announced that actress Jodie Whittaker would replace out-gong Doctor Peter Capaldi as the star of the hit BBC series Doctor Who.

Although it's true the Doctor has regenerated multiple times during the series fifty-four year run, the casting of Whittaker as the next Doctor represents the first time in the shows history that the lead character has not only changed faces, but genders as well.

While many fans greeted this news with enthusiasm, there were some loyalists who quickly took to the World Wide Web to voice their dissatisfaction with the BBC's bold move.

In response to this outcry the BBC has released the following statement:

Watch for Jodie Whittaker as she joins former Broadchurch show-runner Chris Chibnall on this new and exciting adventure when Doctor Who returns on December 25th.

Why a female Doctor makes sense.

Did you know...

There are roughly the same amount of men and women in the world?  Statistically out of every one thousand people there are 504 men (50.4%) and 496 women (49.6%) so although as men we might have a slight lead over the female population, for the most part we are about equal in numbers.

And for that reason alone, it makes sense that after fifty-four years the BBC finally gave the green-light to a female Doctor, because after all there are just as many female fans as there are male fans watching this series.

Now that we've got that out of the way lets talk about this groundbreaking decision, lets talk about the FIRST female Doctor, lets talk about Jodie Whittaker!

She was born Jodie Auckland Whittaker in Skelmanthorpe, a village in West Yorkshire England on June the 3rd 1982. As an aspiring actor Whittaker trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama were she graduated with a gold medal in acting before going onto star in feature films including Venus and Attack the Block. 

Whittaker also starred in Broadchurch alongside former Doctor Who star David Tennant and under the guidance of new Doctor Who show-runner Chris Chibnall - I guess you can say that in some way Jodie Whittaker was already connected to and destined for the T.A.R.D.I.S.

Although Ms. Whittaker has had a short career, having been working professionally for twelve years now, she has landed the role of a lifetime as the next Doctor and this is one fan who wishes her all the best as she helms this science-fiction Juggernaut. 

Watch for Jodie Whittaker to make his first onscreen appearance alongside Peter Capaldi and David Bradley in the Doctor Who Christmas special on December 25th.

Tom Baker as the next Doctor? Why and how this should happen.

Who should replace Peter Capladi as The Doctor?  This has been the question since the announcement of the actors pending departure alongside show runner Steven Moffat in January.  

If you are following us on our social media feeds or via cangeek.com then you know this is a question we have been posing each day for about a week now.   From Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Campbell to Amanda Tapping and Barak Obama we've been having some fun as we suggest the various realistic and unrealistic possibilities.  

However yesterday there was a revelation of sorts, with the closure of Steven Moffat's tenure as show runner for Doctor Who wouldn't it be nice if they also concluded the story arc created during The Day Of The Doctor?  If even for a short time bring back The Curator, bring back Tom Baker!  

After all, thanks to Mr. Moffat the character of The Curator is now canon.

When The Day Of The Doctor aired on November 23rd 2013, fans were introduced to a new world of possibilities with a story arc that has, in my opinion yet to be concluded.  We finally witnessed the horrors of the last great time war, and with the introduction of John Hurt as The War Doctor we also learned that even the greatest of heroes is capable of faltering.

And with Matt Smith's announcement in June of that same year that he would be leaving the series at the conclusion of the Christmas special, we were introduced to the furious eyebrows of the thirteenth doctor - Peter Capaldi! 

With all the Doctors banding together there would be one clear outcome - Gallifrey Falls No More!

The final few minutes of the fiftieth anniversary special would also be monumental and would lay the foundation for the return of previous doctor who actors when Smiths eleventh doctor would come face to face with Tom Baker as The Curator!  During their exchange of dialogue the curator would explain to the doctor that in the years to come he might find himself revisiting a face or two, but only the old favorites.

And with Capaldi recently confirming on the BBC's Graham Norton show that he has already filmed his regeneration sequence the internet is on fire with speculation that the Scottish actor might be leaving early into series ten with a regeneration brought about by an encounter with the Mondasian Cybermen, so what about this years Christmas special?

Steven Moffat has confirmed that he will helm the series until the conclusion of this years special, so will the next doctor begin his journeys under Moffat or will we see Capaldis doctor come full circle and exit the series more or less were he began?

The RadioTimes recently suggested that Capaldi would join forces with the first doctor (played by David Bradley) during the holiday special to confront the Cybermen and that this encounter would lead to Capaldis regeneration. 

What if however this were to happen much earlier on in series ten?  What if The first and the Thirteenth doctors encountered the Cybermen before joining forces in the defense of Gallifrey, a battle that would lead to the current doctors next regeneration - The Curator!

The Christmas special would be an ideal opportunity to tell the story of how Tom Bakers Curator came by the painting of "Gallifrey Falls No More" and would be a perfect gift to longtime fans before creating a scenario for another regeneration sequence into whomever new show runner Chris Chibnall selects.

One can only hope.....

One thing is for sure, with the return of both Michelle Gomez and John Simm, the reintroduction of the Mondasian Cybermen, rumors of David Bradley reprising his role as the first doctor, and the departure of both Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi, the possibilities are endless over the next few months.

Its a good time to be a Whovian!!!

Is the identity of the next Doctor right in front of us?

Peter Capaldi has officially announced his departure from Doctor Who.

The 58 year old Scottish born actor broke the news on a BBC Two radio show confirming that he will turn in the keys to the T.A.R.D.I.S at the end of this years Christmas special.  With that announcement the Internet is already ablaze with speculation over who will play the next incarnation of the runaway from Gallifrey.

With some big names already floating around we can't help but wonder if we've already been introduced to the next occupant of the T.A.R.D.I.S.

In a recent interview with RadioTimes.com Maisie Williams was questioned about the possibility of a return to Doctor Who:

"Well it's wide open" she was quoted as saying. 

Williams character Ashildr/Me was last seen fleeing in a stolen T.A.R.D.I.S alongside Clara Oswald and is one of many characters with a story that could be built upon by incoming show runner Chris Chibinal.

But what if Maisie was to return instead as the first female Doctor?

The foundation of this has already been laid:

The idea that The Doctor has a level of control over his regeneration's was first introduced in the fiftieth anniversary special The Day Of The Doctor when Matt Smith's eleventh Doctor came face to face with The Curator played by former Doctor Who star Tom Baker.

In an exchange of dialogue between the two characters it is strongly implied that Smith's eleventh Doctor has come face to face with a future incarnation barring a face from his past.

The Doctor "I never forget a face"

The Curator "I know you don't and in the years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few, but just the old favorites" 

This idea of revisiting old faces was later used to explain Peter Capaldi who had originally appeared as the Roman Caecilius in The Fires Of Pompeii alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate.  A year and a half into Capaldi's time as The Doctor it is revealed in The Girl Who Died that the face of Caecilius was chosen by the Time Lord as a reminder that no matter the coast he should always try to save lives.

As a result of that realization The Doctor utilizes a Mire repair kit to restore life to the young Viking girl Ashildr (Williams) who will gain immortality as a result and assume the name ME.  The Doctor will go onto encounter Ashildr multiple times throughout series nine, and will come to realize that immortality has become her curse after reading her tear stained journals in The Girl Who Lived.

Could all this play into The Doctors next regeneration?

Although William's went onto tell RadioTimes.com that there has been no communication with the BBC regarding a return to the series, there is absolutely cannon in place to make this more then just speculation.
